The Corps Badge for the Union Army's Fourteenth Corps was an acorn. Divisions within the Corps were denoted by the color of the badge: red for First Division; white for Second Division; and blue for Third Division. The example worn here by Captain Leroy S. Mayfield, Company I, 22nd Indiana Infantry, is pinned to the left breast of his frock coat.

Leroy S. Mayfield was born in Monroe County, Indiana on July 16, 1841 and grew up on a farm not far from Bloomington. Mayfield must have received a good education as a young boy because in the 1860-1861 academic year he was admitted as a student at Franklin College just south of Indianapolis. The following summer, on July 10, 1861 in response to the government's call for troops to put down the rebellion, Mayfield enlisted as a private in Company I, 22nd Indiana Infantry. At the time he was described as being 20 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall with light complexion, blue eyes and black hair. The regiment was being organized in the southern part of the state at Madison, Indiana on the Ohio River.

From Madison barely a week after his enlistment, Mayfield would write, "Our camp is in sight of Kentucky, but we can not [see] the Ohio-River, because it is behind the hills, and timber... Oh! yes, while I think of it, I saw a Woman a few moments since. There is no [use] to try to tell you what all is going on in camp continually, it would take more than a dozen sheets of paper to contain it. My mess mates are, J. T. Eller, J. W. Eller, Wm. Robertson, Henry Huston [Hewson], and a young [Alex] Douglas. I am as well satisfied as you ever saw me." Apparently the boys were looking towards their upcoming military service as a grand adventure and were behaving just as excited young men suddenly released from the inhibitions of home and family would be expected to behave. On August 15, 1861 the regiment was mustered into Federal service for 3 years, and was soon sent west to Missouri.

Going into camp at Kerzingers Cave near St. Louis, Missouri, the men were still green and inadequately outfitted. Here Mayfield noted on August 24, "We are again lying in camp, or rather in tents, waiting for guns, with which to fight. Our Col. refused to take [smoothbore] muskets, while at Indianapolis, he wanted rifles, therefore we have to wait, not knowing which we will get." Eventually the regiment was issued British Enfield rifle muskets.

The 22nd Indiana was part of the Union forces that moved through southwest Missouri and took part in the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas in March 1862, which succeeded in pushing the southerners out of Missouri for the next two years. Although this was the regiment's first significant taste of combat the men acquitted themselves well but took several casualties in killed and wounded. Two weeks before the battle, on February 20, 1862, Mayfield had been appointed a corporal in his company. By late spring, the regiment had moved to Mississippi and joined in the Union siege of Corinth. On April 15, 1862 he was promoted to sergeant, and by July he had risen to first sergeant.

The 22nd Indiana took part in the battles at Perryville, Kentucky in October 1862 in which it lost very heavily, and at Stones River, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee on New Year's 1863 where it again was heavily engaged. Sergeant Mayfield apparently came through both fights without incident. On February 13, 1863, while still encamped at Murfreesboro, Mayfield noted that, after drill, the men of the company divided fairly equally and entered into a spirited engagement, "after the old style of boys play," by throwing wet corn cobs at each other in mock combat. He went on to note that his health was good, and in fact "the health of the company is very good, have no sick, out of 101 men, 61 are left to be accounted for in the company, the remaining 40 are dead, discharged, and transferred." The following day, on February 14, 1863, Mayfield was promoted to 2nd lieutenant, becoming the junior commissioned officer for the company, but he was not able to be mustered at his new rank until March 19.

In June Mayfield's command was called out in the midst of a thunderstorm to guard against an anticipated approach of the enemy. He described the miserable night with levity. "We lay out that night in a tremendous storm…I lay under an ash tree, 'Elevated on a gum-blanket' 'the thickness of your finger nails,' spread on the ground, and covered with one after the same pattern. These, together with my 'old bedfellow' formed the pleasant bed. The little rivulets, 'being no respecter of persons,' gave us a happy greeting as they bounded onward toward Stone River. I lay stubbornly until morning. By the time we returned to camp yesterday afternoon, I was almost dry. This is a common occurrence, and to one who has 'played the soldier' for two years, it is a matter of little importance...There was considerable fighting in the direction of Franklin Tenn. on the fourth, and some in our immediate front. I have not learned the result, but all is quiet again to day."

By late summer the Union army had moved south to Chattanooga in preparation for an advance into Georgia. Between September 18 and 20 Union and Confederate forces clashed at the battle of Chickamauga. Mayfield was not actively engaged in the battle; he had been assigned as part of a detail of guards for a wagon train. However, he and the men with him came very near being cut off and captured during the Union route and retreat but managed to escape after a few close calls back to the Union defenses at Chattanooga where the Confederates laid siege to the Union army under General Rosecrans.

On November 1, 1863, with the captain absent and the 1st Lieutenant detailed as regimental quartermaster, it devolved to 2nd Lieutenant Mayfield to take over command of the Company. He recorded his new responsibility in his diary. "Lieut Marshall has been detailed as 'Quarter Master' of the Regiment for what length of time I know not, consequently I have taken command of the Company to day: and will necessarily have a great deal to do now: more than ever before. I will now have to do a great deal of writing,—Making out 'Monthly Returns,' 'Ration Returns,' 'Ordnance Reports' Muster and Pay Rolls, and doing many other kinds of company business."

He went on to describe his accommodations during the siege. "The rebel pickets stand within two hundred yards of ours, neither one firing, without some demonstrations on the part of the other are made...The cannons are roaring again to day as usual:—create no uneasiness whatever with us, we being so used to them. There has been no fighting in our immediate front for near three weeks. I can see the rebel camps very plain while siting in my 'Hut' which by the way is a very 'fine' little establishment composed principally of Board with a Shingle roof, and a Brick chimney attached, which adds to comfort a great deal, especially of cold rainy days."

Three weeks later, the 22nd Indiana took a prominent part in the battle of Missionary Ridge as the Union army, now under the command of General U. S. Grant, fought to break out of its siege in Chattanooga. Union troops advanced across flat open ground towards the rebel held mountain. The ridge was very steep and quite high, with one line of enemy rifle pits at the base, a second line of rifle pits one third of the distance up, while the crest was lined with troops and artillery. When within one mile of the first line of rebel works, the Federals started on the double quick, which soon increased to the run. As the Union troops crossed the fields below the mountain they were subjected to a severe pummeling by Confederate cannon fire. Small arms fire joined in as the men came in range of rebel infantry muskets. The rapidity of their advance saved them from much injury, and once in the first line of works immediately rushed up the mountainside to the second line, which they then occupied after driving out the defenders. But finding themselves subject to a plunging fire from Confederate guns on the ridge crest the men swarmed out of the rifle pits without orders and surged up the hill towards the top. Just before reaching the enemy's last line, the men came under a murderous cross fire of canister and shell but could not be stopped. The southerners broke and ran as the northerners took possession of the hilltop.

Their rebel retreat was hasty and confused, with a loss of many prisoners and much artillery, yet the Union victory was not without cost. "I received a wound in the right arm when within one hundred yards of the crest of the hill," recalled Lieutenant Mayfield in his diary entry for November 25, 1863. Out of the 40 men of Company I that made the charge, eight of them had been wounded, one mortally.

Mayfield's medical records do not indicate the exact nature of his wound, nor does Mayfield's diary entry specify how he was hurt. The wound does not appear to have been caused by a bullet wound; it seems more likely to have been caused by a severe blow. But whether that blow was delivered by flying metal from an artillery round, being tossed bodily by an explosion, or by being clubbed during hand-to-hand combat is not known. Two days after the fight Mayfield observed, "Morning dawned beautiful and quiet. The entire day passed off without even a rumor to mar the peace of wearied soldiers. My arm swelled very large from shoulder to hand [and] settled black with bruised blood. Can not use it, have not been off duty yet. At night received orders to be ready to march at 7 A. M. tomorrow."

The troops did not march until near noon the following day. But Mayfield did not accompany them. "The weather being very disagreeable," he wrote, "and my arm yet being very sore and painful, the Surgeon advised me to remain in camp, which was reluctantly done, it being the first time that…I have been off duty for more than a year." Mayfield remained at Chattanooga while the regiment marched off as part of a strong force of Union troops under General Sherman for the relief of Union soldiers under General Burnside besieged at Knoxville. With Mayfield and the other officers all absent, Company I was temporarily under the command of a sergeant.

Over the next few days Mayfield felt very lonely in camp. He spent some time searching the hospitals for the wounded of his company, but they were so scattered it was difficult to find them. Meanwhile his injured arm pained him severely and made it difficult to write. In a diary entry for mid December he scribbled, "…when I last wrote, my arm was paining me to much for me to realize what was written. It is now almost well, but not very stout yet. My health is very good, never was better. I have not heard from the regiment, since they left on the 28th of Nov. more than that they were at Knoxville Tenn. and were expected to return soon. The relief sent from here,—under Sherman—to Burnside caused Longstreet to raise the siege of Knoxville on quick time, if not quicker." About the same time, he wrote home saying, "…I had not been absent from my company a single day for more than two years, until the 28 of Nov. when the regiment started to Knoxville Tenn. I was somewhat vexed to think that a slight wound which would be well in a few weeks,—and which would not keep me from doing duty if they were to remain in camp,—should separate me from the company—my companions in arms. To be submissive and cheerful was all that could consistently be done...My health continues good. Wound is almost well, but is not improving much now. I have pretty good use of my arm, can write without any serious pain. But I can not do much, (not even brush my clothes) without interfering with a tender part." In the same letter Mayfield tried to dissuade his younger brother Joseph Mayfield from enlisting in the army, encouraging him instead to stay at home and further his education. Apparently his entreaties were in vain. On March 18, 1864, Joseph Mayfield enlisted as a recruit, joining his older brother in Company I, 22nd Indiana Infantry.

Leroy Mayfield regained command of the company upon its return from Knoxville. By May 1864 the Federals started forward into Georgia under command of General Sherman. Months of hard fighting lay ahead. At Resaca, Georgia on May 15, Mayfield noted, "skirmishing on some portions of the lines all day, while on other portions the battle raged furiously—volley after volley of musketry together with the thundering peals of the many pieces of artillery made the earth to shake, and told of a deadly conflict. In our immediate front skirmishing was heavy until late in the afternoon when the rebels began to hail, 'what regiment is that.' On learning it to be the 22nd 1nd.—they being 2nd Arkansas, who we have met on so many bloody fields of strife—they proposed to cease firing. The proposition was readily accepted and faithfully lived up to, after which a mutual conversation took the place of firing."

That evening Mayfield became ill with dysentery. As the regiment marched over the next few days, Mayfield was compelled to ride in an ambulance, "being yet very sick with flux, disease working heavily upon me." For several days he was unable to eat and became very weak. He was sent to the Division Hospital. It took about a week for him to slowly improve. Finally, on May 23, "Having learned that the regiment would march soon and not desiring to be left behind, I immediately procured a discharge from the hospital and returned to the regiment 1/2 of a mile distant in the eastern part of town, a long walk it was too;—for one feeble as I am. In bed a great portion of the day. Orders to march at 6 A. M. with four days rations in haversacks." On the march the next day Mayfield was "was very weak,—scarcely able to walk," and yet he managed to reach that evening’s camp along with his company after covering 20 miles.

The 22nd Indiana participated in the battle of Dallas on May 27, skirmishing briskly all day. One month later, On June 27, 1864, the regiment participated in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain in which the Union forces made a frontal assault on the Confederate's well-defended position. Extracts from Lieutenant Mayfield’s diary record the day's action. "At early morning preparations were made for an assault on the rebel works...At 8 A. M. all things being ready the Column moved forward driving in the skirmish line. Capturing many. Moved steadily forward under a withering fire, to the rebel works, we occupying one side and they the other not more than 6 feet apart. While here shots were exchanged freely stones were handed either way with terrible velocity, and with telling effect. Col McCook was severely wounded, fifteen minutes later Col Harman 125 Ill, who took command of brigade was killed. At this instant the left gave back by order, and we were compelled to do likewise leaving many of our dead on the field. Had given back 100 yards and reformed. I was wounded with a gun shot in center of left thigh. Being very warm, bled so freely as to make me very weak. Was wounded at half past 10, A. M. At 1 P. M. was at Dv Hospt...The whole line secured an advanced position, the extreme right...advancing near two miles. Near 700 of Davis Division were killed and wounded. Night passed restlessly by, to see so many wounded lying out without shelter or attention. From this time, I am not acquainted with the movements of Regt."

Mayfield's injury was described as a severe gunshot flesh wound. Luckily for him the bullet did not shatter the bone, which would have necessitated an amputation. His diary account continues for the next three days as he was evacuated by ambulance and taken to the General Field Hospital at Big Shanty, Georgia. "June 28, Tuesday...many of the wounded had lain all night without shelter, or attention. Early preparations were made to remove the wounded to the R. R. station, (Big Shanty)…near night I succeeded in getting into an ambulance. The road over which we had to pass was newly cut out, filled with Stumps and stone and terribly cut to pieces with artillery and wagon trains. Traveled near all night, suffering indescribable. June 29, Wednesday. At early morn the ambulance was driven to hospital near by and we were emptied out. Received pretty good attention—good as could be expected. At night heard heavy fighting in front. June 30, Thursday...A soldier by my side dies of wound another near by follows in a few moments. A great many wounded in Hospt."

On July 1 Mayfield was sent by rail back to the U.S.A. General Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He remained there for a week before being forwarded on to the officer's hospital at Nashville where he was admitted on July 8, 1864. Mayfield's wound was slow to heal. A month after the battle he requested a furlough to enable his to continue his recovery at home.

Officers U.S.A. Genl. Hospital
Nashville, Tenn, July 26th 1864
Sir:
I have the honor respectfully to request leave of absence with permission to go beyond the limits of the Department; based on Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability.
I am not a Paroled Prisoner
My Post Office address is,
Bloomington, Ind.
I am Sir,
Very Respectfully,
Your Obdt. Servt.
Leroy S. Mayfield
2nd Liet. Co. I, 22nd Ind. Inf.

He was granted a leave of absence and left for his parents' home on August 3. Because the bullet wound continued to trouble him with continuing infection he requested an extension of his furlough on August 16. He included a statement by a local doctor who examined him and wrote, "[I]...find him unfit for service on account of wound received Kennesaw Mountain on the 27 day of June 1864 in left thigh resulting in a severe attack of fever and in my opinion is unfit for duty and will be for the space of twenty days from the 25th day of this inst at which time his present furlough expires. Monroe Co. Ind. Aug. 16, 1864 B. B. Walker, M.D."

One extension of Mayfield's furlough followed another as his infected wound refused to heal. On November 5 Dr. Walker wrote, "Gunshot wound to the left thigh received at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Said wound was followed by inflammation and a ... fever from which he has not yet recovered." On December 19 the surgeon wrote, "extreme inflammation in the limb from which he has not yet recovered - not being able to walk." The doctor repeated this same diagnosis on January 6, 1865 and again on January 28.

Sometime while Leroy Mayfield was recuperating at home word came that his younger brother, Joseph Mayfield, whom he had advised against enlisting, had been mortally wounded at Jonesboro, Georgia on September 1 and died had on September 17. Mayfield also learned that he had been promoted during his absence, receiving a commission as captain on September 15, 1864.

By February, more than seven months after being shot, Mayfield had finally recovered enough to be ambulatory. He returned from furlough to be readmitted to the officer's hospital at Nashville on February 9, 1865. It took almost two more months before he was returned to duty on April 2, 1865 and rejoined his regiment, by then in North Carolina. On April 26, 1865 he was mustered in at his new rank of captain in command of Company I. By then the war was effectively over. The 22nd Indiana was transferred to Louisville, Kentucky where the men were mustered out of the army on July 24, 1865. Leroy Mayfield returned to his parent's home in Bloomington, Indiana. He never married. The 1870 census shows that he was living with parents and working as a schoolteacher. But one wonders if his wound ever healed completely. Perhaps some foreign matter left in the wound caused chronic lingering infection. Leroy Mayfield died on September 22, 1870. He was 29 years old. He was buried in the Vernal-Mayfield Cemetery in Monroe County, Indiana.
